Zigbee, Z-Wave or Matter: Choosing a Smart Home Standard

The three main smart home protocols explained, and which one to build around.

Zigbee

Widely supported and affordable, Zigbee devices (sensors, bulbs, plugs) are easy to find and generally the cheapest way to build out a smart home, though range per device is shorter than Z-Wave.

Z-Wave

Less crowded radio frequency than Zigbee or WiFi means fewer interference issues, and slightly better range per hop, at a somewhat higher price point for devices.

Matter

The newest standard, backed by Google, Apple, Amazon and Samsung, designed so devices from different brands work together regardless of ecosystem, an increasingly safe long-term choice for new purchases.

Which to choose

For most homes starting fresh in 2026, Matter-compatible devices future-proof the setup best, while Zigbee remains a solid, affordable choice for expanding an existing hub-based system.
